Phillip Zach and Julia Moritz: Astable Multivibrator Circuit and Passive Low Pass Filter
Departing from the notion of the “organic environment” put forward by The Moving Museum’s public programme, artist Phillip Zach and curator Julia Moritz will present the most recent slab of their long term overlapping of questions and practices: the simple yet sincere curiousity about the brain, the master organ (or is it?), and some severe doubt about its current (ab)uses, the perceptional tools and tricks of an environment of cognitive capitalism. Recklessly fusing neuro-biological infotainment and cultural analysis, the two – supported by examples present, mediated, and imagined – will argue over art’s naturality and nature’s artificiality and for an embrace of engineering the always already wrong.
Julia Moritz is an art historian and curator, currently the Curator of Theory and Programmes at Kunsthalle Zurich. Before she has been the Head of Maybe Education and Public Programs of dOCUMENTA (13), Moritz taught contemporary art history at Lüneburg University where she was also the curator of the university gallery. Moritz graduated from Leipzig University and completed her dissertation “Institutional Critique in Spaces of Conflict”, a result of her Critical Studies Fellowship at the Whitney Museum Independent Studies Program in New York and a research residency in Bilbao, Spain.
Phillip Zach is an artist who is interested in mechanisms with which the human mind divides the world and thus creates structures of hierarchy. His work comprises various media such as text, objects, installations, curatorial projects and collaborations. Zach is currently based in Istanbul for a one-year residency by Hessische Kulturstiftung. He studied at the University of Fine Arts, Hamburg (2006-09), and at Städelschool Frankfurt (2009-12). Previous solo exhibitions include Content is Fiction, New Jerseyy (Basel) and Hospital Postures at Johan Berggren Gallery (Malmö). His work has been shown in various exhibitions including Freedman Fitzpatrick Gallery (Los Angeles), White Flag Projects (St. Louis), Greene Naftali Gallery (New York), Sandy Brown Gallery (Berlin), Halle für Kunst (Lüneburg), Museum of Modern Art (Frankfurt), and Museum of Contemporary Art (Roskilde).
